About my work

I have been making and showing my jewellery at Goldsmiths Fair for 34 years and each year brings change and new development into unfamiliar and challenging aspects of my work. This year I explore colour contrast, narrative drawn from found materials and construction which reaches beyond the frame.

I aim for a consistent set of values and integrity in every piece. Each item must work as a whole and all its elements need to be in balance so it is simple to use and a joy to wear. My jewellery combines remarkable stones in simple settings made with traditional techniques, is a pleasure to handle and looks good on or off the body.

I am based in London and my work has been shown in galleries across Europe, the USA and Japan, as well as my native Scandinavia.

I am always happy to talk over design ideas you may have. Please get in touch via the Contact page. You can also arrange a studio visit to see my work.

A Jade Ring

In lockdown, a lovely client sent me a beautiful Jade Cabochon she had bought on a trip to China some years ago.

Her children wanted to give her something special for an important Birthday and here is the result, boxed and ready to be presented.

A Packet returns

A packet back from the Assay office

Now a lot of polishing before setting the stones to complete Rings and Brooches

Where I work

For the past 25 years I have worked from my studio in a Victorian industrial building in Camden Town.

Like the bird in the picture, from my window I can enjoy the neighbour’s garden., but, mostly, I focus on what’s on my workbench.

Upstairs is my office with a drawing board and a sitting area where clients are welcome to join me to see my work.

Processes and techniques I use

I use traditional stone cutting and polishing methods to shape the stones I work with.

Sometimes I use prepared stones like cabochons, but often I am cutting my own shapes from raw material.

The settings for the stones are made using traditional jewellery and silversmithing techniques.

Gemstones I work with

I like working with lapis lazuli, labradorite and tourmaline.

I enjoy cutting the raw material myself, where possible, preserving some rough surfaces which are characteristic of the mineral in its native form.

Gemstones I work with

I was attracted to this fine nephrite specimen.

My idea was to use the stone in a large ring and the challenge was to work out how to mount such a large piece in a way which was stable and comfortable.

The image illustrates my starting point. the stone itself, accurate measurement and means to refine the shape if necessary

Other materials I work with

Walking my local beach offers endless fascination. I collect a heap of intrigue and sometimes end up with treasures to keep and later develop into design ideas.

Driftwood with its different layers of paint and fragmented surface is a record of past experiences. Pebbles smoothed by the waves are natural to the beach, but other materials can be unexpected and I wonder how on earth that washed up here.
